One of the most talked-about new car introductions of the 1980s was the two-seat, mid-engine Pontiac Fiero of 1984.

An innovative space-frame design with a plastic body, the Fiero was a fuel-efficient sports car that fit the era perfectly and quickly captured the public's attention when Pontiac was still truly exciting.

All '84 Fieros were powered by a basic Iron Duke four-cylinder, but the high-performance Fiero GT, released in 1985, added a more powerful 2.8-liter multi-injection V6 engine and a special body aero kit. The latter was almost entirely carried over from the race-ready '84 Fiero that served as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 that year.
