The Bismarck, the flagship of the Reich's warship fleet, was, along with the Tirpitz, the largest German warship.

Accompanied by Prinz Eugen, he was soon discovered by British aerial reconnaissance aircraft. On May 25, 1941, a battle with the Hood ended in the Hood's loss.
A long chase ensued and he was again attacked by British ships, the battleships King George V and H.M.S. Rodney targeted. She was finally sunk by her crew on May 27, 1941, less than 300 miles (490 km) from the French coast.
