It is one of the most distinctive aircraft in military history: the Boeing E-3A Sentry, better known as AWACS. With its huge, rotating radar on the fuselage, it is the flying command center of NATO and the US Air Force. The construction of the E-3A is fascinating because it is based on the classic Boeing 707, but the military additions give it a completely unique character. The highlight is of course the radar rotodome that towers above the fuselage. With the included decals you can build a piece of local history: NATO's E-3A component is based in Geilenkirchen, Germany and the "Tigermeet" design from 2017 is a real visual highlight for any display case.
Background information
AWACS stands for Airborne Warning And Control System. The E-3 Sentry provides allies with critical information about the airspace and battlefield in real time. It can locate aircraft hundreds of kilometers away, long before ground-based radars would see them. The E-3G version (Block 40/45) shown here represents the most comprehensive upgrade in the type's history, replacing analog technology with state-of-the-art digital systems. This model celebrates the technical evolution of one of the most important aircraft in Western defense.
