Description:
From the end of the 8th century, the Vikings, who came from Scandinavia, regularly appeared in Great Britain and on the European mainland with their longships for raids. These ocean-going, approximately 20-meter-long battleships had a bow at the front and back, so that they could enter or leave in either direction. Thanks to a shallow draft of almost 1.50 meters, the Vikings were also able to sail or row on rivers and thus raid areas deep in the interior of the country. The Vikings advanced as far as Iceland, Greenland and even North America with the battleships, also known as dragons, which were fast and agile at around 20 knots, as settlement finds prove.
