It may not be the first thing you think of getting for riding your bike but after a couple of rides by the river or a road ride that has the sun in your eyes for minutes on end, a pair of cycling glasses will be top of the list.
For mountain bikers the glasses are as much protection against dust as the sun. If you are out in a group and the person in front is kicking up dust, gravel and dirt in front of you the last thing you want is a bit in your eye. So many cycle branded glasses come with inter-changeable lenses including clear, smoked and yellow. Clear are perfect against the dust and grit of the forest, not much light gets through the canopy so a clear lens is ideal. Smoked lens is like your standard sunglasses so pop them in when you are out in the open on a sunny day. The yellow lens works great in the twilight hours, it enhances the light you do have and gives you a bit of extra time in the saddle.
For road cycling a set of cycle specific sports glasses is a common purchase. Most road cycle specific glasses have a wraparound frame and lens design to keep flies, rain, the wind and the sun out of your eyes whilst riding. Some now come with a homochromatic lens that will change colour depending on how much sunlight they are blocking out.
Cycle or sport specific glasses come in a wide range of styles and colours, most professional riders have them to colour co-ordinate with their team kit. Cycle sunglasses have come a long way since the 1950's and 60's where fashion glasses were worn before the development of the now standard lightweight and high tech frames and lenses.
