From the end of the 8th century, the Vikings from Scandinavia regularly appeared in Great Britain and on the European mainland with their longships for raids.
These ocean-going, around 20 meter long combat ships had a bow at the front and back so that they could enter or leave in either direction.
Thanks to a shallow draft of just under 1.50 meters, the Vikings were also able to sail or row on rivers and thus raid areas deep inland. With the battleships, also known as dragons, which were fast and maneuverable at around 20 knots, the Vikings penetrated as far as Iceland, Greenland and even North America, as settlement finds prove.
