- Description:
The Avro Lancaster was the most famous RAF heavy bomber of WWII and entered service in 1942. More than 7,300 machines were built for the Royal Air Force Bomber Command. One of the most important goals of the RAF was the destruction of the dams in the Ruhr area, which supplied important industrial plants with electricity. In order to effectively hit resistant targets such as dams or dams, a rotary dam-busting bomb, better known as a bouncing bomb, was developed. A new unit was created specifically for this attack, 617 Squadron, commanded by Lt. Col. Guy Gibson. Codenamed Operation Chastise, this attack took place with 19 Lancaster bombers on the night of May 16/17, 1943.
